Age-related macular degeneration & the ophthalmologist

"The indications for which I use spirovital therapy are circulatory disorders of the retina and diseases of the optic nerve, including visual field loss after a stroke. Patients receive five to ten 20-minute treatments. Afterwards, their visual field is checked, the back of the eye is examined and their general well-being is assessed. The overall response from patients is very positive. Objectively, there are usually significant improvements in visual performance, sometimes up to two visual levels. The symptoms are often significantly reduced, although rarely completely eliminated. The quality of life is generally significantly improved in most patients.

Etiology - pathogenesis (development of age-related macular degeneration)

The causes of macular degeneration are not yet clearly understood. It has been suggested that practically everyone of an appropriate age could be affected, so that genes and environmental factors "merely" determine the time of onset. Smoking, high blood pressure, obesity and excessive exposure to sunlight are the most important risk factors. According to unanimous opinion, the disease begins with an increased formation of oxygen radicals and their inadequate disposal (restricted microcirculation), which triggers reactions in the center of the retina that ultimately lead to the destruction of light-sensitive cells. This stage is referred to as "dry" macular degeneration, the most common form (approx. 80 percent). In "wet" macular degeneration (approx. 20 percent), which can develop from "dry" macular degeneration, small vessels sprout under the retina, forming edema. They act like an insulating layer with the result that the oxygen supply to the retina deteriorates further. In summary, an excessive accumulation of oxygen radicals on the one hand and an increasing restriction of optimal oxygen supply on the other are obviously mainly responsible for the development of AMD, indicating the possibilities of spirovitalization (supply of energized inhaled air) to prevent or treat it.

Age-related macular degeneration in the clinic

Changes in the center of the retina can be detected ophthalmologically long before subjective limitations occur, which documents the importance of appropriate preventive examinations. Subjective symptoms can include distortion of straight lines (window frames, house walls), fading of colors, blurring of words (newspaper) and black (empty) areas in the center of the visual field. Everyday activities such as reading, watching television, driving and recognizing faces become increasingly difficult, contrasts become blurred, contours become distorted. Ultimately, only shadowy outlines are recognizable. Initially, only one eye may be affected so that the impairment is barely noticeable.

General therapy for age-related macular degeneration

With regard to dry macular degeneration, especially its early form, it is currently almost unanimously argued that there is no specific therapy. However, attention should be paid to any general risk factors that may be present, which should be reduced (smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, excessive exposure to sunlight). From a naturopathic point of view, preventive measures should include moderate physical exercise therapy, especially endurance sports, as well as an adequate diet (avoidance of saturated fatty acids, preference for monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, adequate supply of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants) and a harmonious lifestyle (avoidance of stress or its prompt reduction or compensation). This context provides clear indications of the importance of neutralizing oxygen radicals and improving the oxygen supply to the structures of the inner eye. Various therapeutic procedures are propagated by the specialist associations, possibly also in the presence of a late form of "dry", but above all "wet" macular degeneration: Photodynamic therapy (PDT), laser therapy and photocoagulation, Macu gen/ Lucentis and Avastin injections, peroral intake of vitamins and minerals, retinal rotation and macular translocation as well as cortisone/triamcinolone injections. Alternative therapists supplement with various acupuncture procedures, radiation therapy, macular glasses and behavioral modification. Patients repeatedly point out the fact that severe visual field restrictions have regressed to such an extent as a result of non-conventional therapies, which they have nevertheless consciously adopted, that they have been able to resume many activities that they had to do without for years. In the foreground of their ocular memory were improvements in the circulation of the affected vessels as well as (and above all) the activation of retinal processes (whatever is meant by this, but certainly aspects that go far beyond medical processes).

The principle of spirovitalization consists of briefly increasing the oxygen in the ambient air from its basic state (triplet oxygen, 3O2) to a higher energy level (singlet oxygen, 1O2) by exposing it to light of a specific wavelength in the presence of a selected special photosensitizer. However, this higher energy level of oxygen "only" persists for fractions of a second until the energy released during the return to the ground state is released to the water molecules in the air (law of conservation of energy), inhaled together with the "normal" atmospheric oxygen in the ambient air (water vapor-saturated inhaled air) and ubiquitous distribution throughout the entire organism is initiated.

_For four vital, energy-dependent metabolic areas, these correlations have been theoretically derived and practically confirmed by corresponding studies (increase in oxygen release, increase in oxygen utilization, stabilization of the oxidative balance, optimal provision of reduction equivalents). The experience and findings available and evaluated to date show that spirovitalization represents a complex intervention in the biocybernetic and bioenergetic functional processes of the organism, which, by harmonizing the basic regulation in the cell and in the extracellular matrix, leads to an improved oxygen supply in all structures and there to increased O2 utilization and thus activates the cell's own energy production (ATP) and contributes to regulation of cell metabolism in the entire organism. Spirovitalization activates and supports necessary bioregulatory processes both preventively and curatively in the sense of a holistic and universally applicable measure. As a basic therapeutic agent, it supports and promotes both prevention and rehabilitation, performance optimization and regeneration acceleration, clinical treatment concepts and conventional medical interventions.

Age-related macular degeneration - Conclusion

Macular degeneration is a slowly progressive damage to the most sensitive area of the retina at the back of the eye, accompanied by an increasing loss of visual acuity.
